CircularTrace Successfully Tests Pyrolysis Reactor Converting Coffee Processing Waste into High-Quality Activated Carbon

09 Desember 2025

CircularTrace, a circular economy consortium focused on sustainable technology innovation, successfully conducted testing of its latest pyrolysis reactor prototype designed to convert coffee processing biomass waste into high-quality activated carbon.

The pyrolysis reactor represents a major technological advancement in optimizing agro-industrial waste utilization. The equipment is equipped with a digital temperature control system that allows operators to precisely regulate and maintain heating temperatures throughout the pyrolysis process. Accurate temperature control plays an important role in determining the surface area, porosity, and overall quality of the activated carbon produced.

The pyrolysis process works by thermally decomposing coffee biomass materials such as coffee husks, hulls, and spent coffee grounds in an oxygen-free environment. This process produces carbon char, which can then be activated into high-quality activated carbon suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

The innovation provides both environmental and economic benefits. Coffee processing activities generate large amounts of biomass waste every year, which is often discarded and can contribute to environmental pollution. Through this technology, coffee waste can be transformed into a valuable product while reducing landfill accumulation and supporting circular economy principles.

Activated carbon produced from coffee waste has strong market potential and can be utilized in various sectors including water filtration, air purification, and pharmaceutical industries. The use of coffee waste as a low-cost raw material also creates additional economic opportunities for coffee farmers and processing industries.

Prof. Novizar Nazir, Head of the Circular Economy Consortium, stated that the successful testing demonstrates that coffee waste should no longer be viewed as an environmental problem but as a valuable resource. He also emphasized that the reactor’s digital control system ensures consistent activated carbon quality and supports the future development of commercial-scale production systems.

Through this innovation, CircularTrace continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainable technology development, environmental responsibility, and value-added utilization of agricultural waste within the coffee industry.
